Excellent cruise on Celebrity Summit

Rome (Civitavecchia)

The Summit had been in drydock to be refurbished so 99.9% of the ship's interior was new.  Nothing wrong with the ship.  Pool deck on sea days was crowded.  Disembarkation on shore days was very smooth.  Orchestra was exceptional as were the performers.  Staff was very friendly and did their jobs extremely well in the cafeteria and our cabin attendant was EXCEPTIONAL.  We had anytime dining but always had a window table at 5:00 PM.  

 Embarkation was very smooth but the lady that tok our credit card information messed up so we had to redo later on the ship.  Not many children on the cruise so difficult to rate how things went for them. Really enjoyed Old San Juan and  although  apprehensive based on past reviews we wandered all over downtown Nassau and the locals were extremely friendly as they passed us by. Celebrity is always a notch above the competition.

Great Trip

This ship needs to be retired.  The renovations in the public areas were done very nicely, but there is rust showing everywhere.  We had an Aquaclass room on Deck 9 and it was not close to being up to par for a Celebrity ship.  The balcony was rusty, furniture was very old,  and balcony door barely worked.  

Food at the Blu was hit or miss.  Definitely a few steps below the Edge class.  The last time we cruised before this trip was 2018 on the Edge.  Celebrity quality of food was bland in the Blu restaurant.  Not much for presentation and anything that stood out. 

The ship staff was excellent and attentive as always.  

The shore excursions I would give zero stars too.  The worst experience from 8 cruises we have been on with Celebrity.  They cancelled our 7 mile island part of our excursion without any advanced warning.  We ended up doing a VIP snorkel cruise, which was no more than a small old SeaRay boat.  Water was so eough, many of us stayed on the boat.  

I’ll continue with Celebrity, but only on their newer ships.

Celebrity, this ship needs to be retired!

Cabin bathroom (Deck 2) was mouldy with an overwhelming musty odour.  By day two cabin mate had breathing issues.  Staff addressed mould by applying some strong chemicals over several days (suggested we keep bathroom door propped open).  Unfortunately, with no window and therefore no outside air circulating,  the strong chemicals did not dissipate at all. The chemicals remained strong within room during the day and night.  By day 6 we both ended up with watery lungs and reduced energy.  Got back home - Doc confirmed chemical induced lung infection.  Still coughing up phlegm 2 weeks after.  Go figure.

Entertainment was oh so lacklustre!  No piano music,  no band with Latin style repertoire to dance the evenings away. 

Foodies will be disappointed.  The Daily Specials in the main dining room have been drastically downgraded.   Yawn….  Squash and tomato soups, iceberg lettuce, pasta and rice dishes abound!  Argh!  I throw these dishes together every busy weeknight.  Yawn.

Thankfully… their Staff was friendly, attentive and truly outstanding!!!

Mouldy old ship! Foodies, Dancing & singsong-nope!

We enjoyed the cruise very much. The demographic was elderly, more of a gravitational thing rather than efforts of the ship. The crew was friendly and accommodating. Fellow passengers seemed especially convivial. 

Food was very good. Soups and appetizers especially. French Onion soup is excellent. On the last day, they served a massive amount of excellent shrimp along with chocolate fondue so I would not miss that.  Service was slow when we had reservations at 5:45. Much better is you enter at 8:00 or so. Waiters are a bit more relaxed. Some might complain about slowness of service if reservation is at 5:30-6:30.  

    One suggestion is to match the port with the food. No Key Lime Pie when visiting port of Key West or Mexican food in the two Mexican ports. 

    Activities; I like the idea of lectures. They had these on octopuses, sharks, Mayan Cultures etc. One can learn from the Mexican Ambassadors how to do the Salsa, Cha Cha  Lots of trivia. Adult arts and crafts. Bingo. Contests between crew and guests,  Lounge chairs always filled. Maybe a lottery or an odd-even cabin number or enforce rules that one can only leave a chair for 30 minutes. There is an area near the hamburger/hot dog snack area with tables, but not enough chairs. Suggestion 4 chairs at each table and not two. 

     Entertainment: I note that other reviewers have not been impressed but we were. Enjoyed the vioinist Tetiana Sapozhnikova (spelling?). Julian Colte: He had two performances spaced apart, Elton John and Billy Joel. Very energetic, talented pianist. Sit on the left side as you are enter to see his fingers pound and glide on the piano ( especially if you took piano lessons). Chloe Lowery singer also gave two performances. She has a great voice, obviously loves to perform and please her audience. First performance was great second not as much but that was due to a choice of songs. The magician Wes Barker was very good and he too gave two performances one at night and the other afternoon. Has good timing and sense of humor. One night the four singers in the performers sang.  All English, nice voices and expressions. Emma stood out as the best. The production show was very good too. I appreciated the live band, since some cruises now use canned music. Two suggestions: a few times, especially on the production show, the drummer drowned out the voices of the singer, especially on the Harold Arlen (from Buffalo) number. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and even more so on Julie Styne's cynical song A Diamond's A Girls Best Friend. The lighting director needs to be told DO NOT SHINE THE BRIGHT LIGHT INTO THE AUDIENCE. It gave us headaches and I had to close my eyes during the Production number. 

Other Entertainment: Nice to hear Caribbean music. The steel drum player David was excellent.  I cannot figure why so many cruise ships do not play reggae or Soco music on Caribbean cruises. The Lucky Band was very good and the lead performer very versatile. Dyckeside was a group from Barbados and they too were enjoyable. RJ Replay acoustic Duo seemed plesant and tried hard but not as enjoyable. Did not hear the guitar.

EXCURSIONS: We went on two: Key West trolley tour which was fine as it gave us a good view of Key West. Later we walked on a similar route. Saw the Hemmingway House and Truman's Little White House. Would have liked a good recommendation on key lime pie. The second excursion the glass bottom boat in Grand Cayman was not that good. If you want to see two shipwrecks it is recommended but the coral reefs were destroyed in the hurricane and basically one school of fish. Most of the excursions are over priced. I would recommend getting off the ship in Costa Maya. There is a small park with gorgeous flamingos and a few other birds and a dolphin pool with a few dolphins trying to play volleyball. ( Although I did feel sorry for the dolphins penned up in a small area. 

EXERCISE ROOM: Very adequate. Typical of others on a ship. Strongly recommend small lesser pound weights being added. Older crowd and less likely to toss iron than younger more muscular passengers. Also, only three recumbent bikes. Had to wait. Tip: there are five channels for music. If they are playing some of that awful music we often hear nowadays they can switch to instrumentals with a pounding beat. 

Others: Cruise director Manual grows on you and is quite entertaining. Bethany the Activities Manager is wonderful.

VERY ENJOYABLE CRUISE

1st and foremost, we did enjoy our cruise and are still fans of Celebrity. We felt safe and did not have any major concerns while sailing. However, this was not Celebrity's best showing, and I'm not sure I'll book a trip on an older ship again. The Summit is definitely showing her age. Fabrics are worn, rooms feel cramped, buffet food is cold, and service in the main dining area was subpar. The Classic drink package cap of $10 left us feeling like 'less-than' because all advertised drinks were $12 or higher. We needed to verify that the drinks we were requesting were available in our package, which, to be honest, ruined the fun of the drink package. We've always had the classic drink package, and it's always been great for us, as we consider ourselves vacation drinkers only. This time it felt negatively different. 

We sailed the S. Caribbean and were looking forward to all the ports. However, we felt most were tourist traps with hard sales and did not feel safe in certain locations. We loved St. Martin but did not enjoy the other ports. Dominica was full of stray dogs (which I love dogs), but they were unwell and ignored by locals. Everything felt like a tourist trap in all ports except for St. Martin.

Happy to be cruising but AVERAGE at best 

The ports were great, especially St. Lucia and Dominica were great. The others were typical tourist stops. The food on the ship was great, and our room, while small, was perfect, except for a hard to open balcony door. The issue I had was that it seemed like there were two cruises, one for Spanish speakers and another for the rest. There wasn’t much interaction between the groups and the activities drew on group or the other most of the time. There was also a lot of new staff on board learning their jobs. My cabin steward barely spoke to us. On our last sea days, at dinner no one came over to get our drink request. On lobster night, a waiter walked by, put down our bread and walked away. These told me that these people are new.  Embarkation and debarkation were very easy. There were no problems with crowding to get on and off. The comic and magician were good.

Southern Caribbean Cruise 11/30 Celebrity Summit 

The good:

Excellent magician/comic.

Great cabin staff.

Fine cabin A/C.

Interior of ship is very good condition.

Cabin interior is better than expected shape for the age of the Summit.

Not so good:

Some our transportation vehicles, like the one in Dominica for a 4.5 hour tour had seen its better days long ago.  Advertised as "air conditioned motor coach" finally asked everyone to open the windows.

No Banana's anywhere after breakfast.

In the Garden Cafe (buffet) eggs, waffles, and pancakes were always cold.

Dinner in MDR for both reserved time and walk in averaged one hour forty minutes.  Way too long.

Dining staff asked for a 9-10 rating which is not ethical or fair to them to be forced to suggest.  Poor management.

Banging of exterior rust on sea day was annoying for balcony guests.

Poor directional signage for bow/stern.

Actually found Celebrity to be no better than the other five comparable main stream cruise lines.

Would be nice to have balcony railing glass rinsed.

Nice way to see remote eastern carib. islands.  

Awful! I abandoned the ship at the first port of call. The food was spoiled, the AC in the cabin never worked, and the cabin was full of dust. The carpet was disgusting, the drapes were all broken, and the tile in the shower was falling apart, so I had to use slippers in the shower to avoid the glue attaching to my feet. Most importantly, it was infested with bed bugs, and I had to see a doctor at the first port of call. 

The crew was not helpful and instead tried to charge us for an upgrade. I will never sail with Celebrity Cruises again, even though I have high status with them. They attempted to charge us an outrageous amount of money to change to the next room category.

Stay away from this ship; it is old and falling apart, with rust everywhere. This is definitely not what I expected from a Celebrity cruise after sailing with them over five times before.

Awful! Stay away. 

This was my first experience on Celebrity Cruises.  My fare included a beverage package, specialty restaurant access and basic internet.  In addition, I booked into an Aqua Class Verandah Stateroom which provided some extra amenities, access to the spa's Persian Garden and access to the Blu dining room.  Keep in mind if you receive specialty restaurant access in your fare package, you will not be able to make reservation in advance of the cruise, which is annoying.

Pre cruise, I was inundated with constant sales for shore excursions and various upgrades.  I took advantage of one of these "sales" to upgrade to a premium drink package, premium internet and various shore excursions.  The many "sales" all offered fairly similar deals, and the pricing was better than onboard purchase pricing.  

Pre cruise information was plentiful and embarkation was the smoothest I've had on any ship. No waits, easy boarding and our room was ready when we boarded at 1pm.  I was able to easily make restaurant reservations and the ship seemed uncrowded.  At dinner, however the lines were long at the main dining restaurants and all required a wait, including Blu.  The lines on night one did not provide a good first impression, however we did not experience waits any other nights of our cruise.

In general, the food and service was fine in main dining rooms, the buffet and specialty restaurants.  The positives: Service in Blu was particularly good with our server Elvez.  Le Petite Chef provided an entertaining experience with digital mapping of the table, something I have not seen at any dining venue.  The negatives: Dining options were fairly limited for a modern ship.  More or less, one main dining room, a buffet and three specialty restaurants was a little lackluster.  The food in the main dining rooms (including Blu) were very focused on continental cuisine with not as much variety as I've seen on other lines.

The bars were prompt, had good variety, were all-made and almost all drinks were included in the premium beverage package.  The beverage package wine list was fairly limited, but this is not uncommon on most lines.

Entertainment provided a good variety from cover musicians to comedians to "broadway" variety shows.  Lounge acts cruise line specific shows were fairly standard and mostly entertaining.

The ship was renovated in 2019 and had a modern, contemporary look.  Same for staterooms and they included lots of plugs and USB chargers.  The beds are king-sized and super comfortable, some of the best at sea.  Look deeper and the ship is showing its age with rust and wear in various exterior areas.

The Starlink WiFi was excellent.  Very fast, good coverage and few downtimes.  

The itinerary was amazing with stops in the Southern Caribbean.  St. Lucia and St. Kitts were particularly excellent.

My biggest complaint in an otherwise good experience was the disembarkation.  The information we were provided was not clear we needed to be out of our stateroom by 8am.  Cruises I've taken in the past on other lines allow for a more leisurely disembarkation.  Our cabin attendant was attempting to get us out at 7:30am and has attitude when we waited until 7:50am.  Disembarkation was mostly smooth, but this final impression was not a good one.

All-in-all, a solid experience on a solid line.

Pleasant Experience with Great Itinerary

Hong Kong

Celebrity has two trans-Panama Canal cruises per year as they move one ship from the Caribbean season to the Alaska season run and back again in April and September. As TAs, my sister and I had toured Summit when she was stopped in San Francisco in April on her way to Vancouver, BC, and we liked the ship as we had sailed on sister ship Millennium in 2022 to Alaska. We started looking at the return LA to Ft. Lauderdale cruise in September as a possibility for our elderly parents to see the Panama Canal. As the second of two annual PC cruises offered by Celebrity, cabins sold quickly, especially the accessible ones that we would need for our Dad, who uses a wheelchair. So we kept watching and in August several aft cabins became available, so we grabbed one of the Ultra Deluxe Family Verandas that sleeps 5+. We had 4 in the spacious cabin, which has a partition between sleeping areas, and a 10'x 16' veranda that turned out to be perfect for a person with a rollator. It was the next best thing to an accessible cabin! The 15 night transcanal route has a lot of sea days, so the huge veranda was the greatest thing and we all enjoyed it very much, with the sound of the ship's wake creating a constant waterfall effect.  We were close to the aft elevators and, of course, all the dining is aft so we didn't have to push the wheelchair the length of the ship this time, except when we went to the Sky Lounge all the way forward a few times. 

Food was good, as usual, and the Tuscan Grill was outstanding for our first night dinner. Our cabin steward, Apollo, was wonderful and took great care of us and my Dad's special needs. My sister and I enjoyed our shore excursions in Puerto Vallarta, Costa Rica, Cartagena and Aruba, and sea days filled with trivia, mixology class, wine tasting, indoor curling, the pools, and hanging out on the veranda. We did miss one port: Huatulco, Mexico, due to having to avoid cat 3 Pacific hurricane John. And after Cartagena we were supposed to head to Georgetown, Grand Cayman, but had to divert to Aruba instead, to avoid what would in a few days become Hurricane Milton. That is the only drawback to a cruise in that region at the end of hurricane season - you might definitely have a change of port calls. But since I had never been to Grand Cayman or Aruba, either one was fine with me and I still got to do my Atlantis mini-sub excursion! The Captain kept us well-informed and safety was the top priority, along with assuring we all still had a good time. Good job, Celebrity!
